tektite ring

Postby Paul on Sat Jan 24, 2009 2:32 pm

This may be the only one in the world,,, errrr well, perhaps on the web any way.
I have almost finished the sanding and will move into polishing tomorrow.

This didn't turn out the way I wanted and will only be worth anything to me. As you guys may already know tektite is a very high stressed glass. Well less just say I now know how to relieve that stress, Just start drilling the core and about 1/3 of the way through,,, it will relieve it's self.
I glued it back together (3 pieces) and finished drilling and shaping. Not to let a little thing like , shattered all to pieces stop me.

Thanks, Oh yea I still want to inset a diamond ( if I can talk my wife out of one (or two) of her old ones.
And the crap on the inside is the remains of the glue that I haven't sanded off yet.

expensive? no not really,, on eBay endochintes run from 10. bucks to 70 or 80. I paid 12.00 for this one.
No one is doing much with them in the way of jewelry other than wire wrapping type. That are under internal stress from the cooling so they go poof real easy.

A cute story about this ring,
I inset a 1 ct CZ diamond into the top that my wife had in her junk ring box. It looked like crap but after setting it and a good cleaning it really started to show some color. A few days latter I was at the local mall and went into the jewelery store to have it tested. After some funny looks at it the guy tasted it, and it passed. He told me it was the most perfect diamond that he had ever seen. Now I have a problem, this was like finding the Mickey Mantle baseball card at a yard sale for 2 bucks. What to do?. A few days latter I had the day off from work and took it to a gemologist that I know. He looked at it for a few seconds and took it to the microscope and concluded that it was after all a CZ. We all had a good laugh at my reaction but now I can keep it for myself without worry.

If I didn't have good morals I could always sell it to a pawn shop for way more than it is really worth. I would never do that but it would be fun to see what they would offer.

Edit:
If it ever (when) the band brakes I will cut the top off and set it onto a titanium band.
I have began to make some bands from titanium and gluing cab stones on top. I'll post a pic latter of my first one.

The tektite ring met with ill fate and broke into 3 parts. So I remodeled it into a his and hers pair on stainless steel bands. I couldn't find titanium at a good price. (one company wanted 99.95 for one m18 nut. another wanted 4 bucks for an m16 but required a min. purchase of 100, so I can't spent 4000 dollars for them) .

Here's a pic or two of the rework.

Edit: I wanted to post a thumbnail but it didn't work, perhaps one of the forum mods could repair this for me.
