Hello from NM

Postby Hexic on Thu Aug 13, 2009 12:14 pm

Hey all!

Just signed up to the forums and thought I'd say hello. I've been a rock nerd all my life and over the past few months I've been buying cabs online to have made into jewelry for my business, and somewhere along the line I decided it would be fun to start cabbing on my own. I've been reading the forums for a while and have picked up some great info.

I bought a DP Genie off ebay that had been purchased and never used (and which should be arriving any minute from FedEx) and picked up a 7" Workforce tile saw from Home Depot last night. Just need to make a trip to the lapidary shop tomorrow to get some polishing compound and dop wax and I should be good to go :)

I'll be starting on some cheap slabs I've picked up so far to learn on. My end goal is to work boulder opal for the most part, but there is definately some awesome stuff out there that I'm itching to try out.

Of course I'm already chomping at the bit for a nice slab saw. Does anyone happen to have any good plans for building one? I'm thinking a 12-14" would be as large as I need to go. Anything above that and I'll pay the local shop to do it for me.

Will post some pictures of my setup and what I'm sure will be some horrific looking beginner cabs after the weekend :)

Hello Drew,
Sounds like you are getting set up real good. Be sure to show us your set up. Of course your cabs to. I built my own 12" saw, but don't have any plans, I just winged it as I went along. I'll be glad to help as I can.
Welcome to the group, and please make yourself at home. Look forward to your progress reports,
KOR
