What Kind Of Rock Is This?

Postby jodot on Fri Jul 24, 2009 2:25 pm

I found this rock in my garden this week. I always have my eye out open for interesting rocks but never seen one like this. Does anyone have any idea what kind of rock it is. To me it looks like a big prehistoric tooth. Anyway, I'm hoping it is, it would be great find. :P Any suggestions?

Hi Jodot,
It's hard to tell for sure, but it seems to be some sort of Jasper, possibly basonite. I don't think it is a tooth, that would be cool.
Also, welcome aboard, we are glad to have you!
Where abouts are you from, that may help a little in IDing the rocks better. Some areas have a lot of chert, and others Jasper.
Talk to you soon,
Dan

Thank you for the info. I will have to read up on Jasper and basonite. Darn, wish it was a tooth. Maybe I'll find something else cool sometime. I have found a few Indian artifacts. I live in Central Iowa around 50 miles from Des Moines. Not very rocky just in spots. There are a few rocks in my garden but nowhere else in the yard. Thanks :D
