Cab templates

Postby tonyterner on Thu Dec 20, 2007 9:03 am

Since I spend most of my day drawing on a computer I tend to make drawings for everything. When I got interested in cabbing I drew up a bunch of templates of shapes I had seen that I like. I am making the offer to send these to anyone that is interested. I can send them in a pdf file via email or I can print them out on card stock and mail them to you.

Aha, there they are. Neato.. When I think of templates I usually think of plastic or metal with holes in. What is the best way to transfer from card stock to slabs? Do you cut holes in the card stock with an exacto knife? Are those 8-1/2 x 11 sheets? I have a friend with laser machining capability. Would you be interested in having me see if he can do a bunch of those in plastic for sale? If so, PM me for an email address you can send the pdf to. And if you would be interested in some Ninilchik beach rocks in exchange for the card stock, let me know.

One shape I have trouble finding is triad, and I do not see it in your pic. That is the equilateral triangular shape with the curved sides.

Spacegold,
Yes they are 8 1/2" X 11" sheets. I cut holes into the card stock with an exacto then use a fine point sharpie or a pencil to tranfer the pattern to the slab. Its not nearly as nice as plastic would be. I'll pm you about the possiblity of putting them on plastic. I doubt I would sell them but would be willing to give them out.

I actaully have a 7th sheet started that has a couple of variations of that shape. I'll update the pic to show those. I'm always looking for new shapes and CAD makes it so easy to acurately draw them.

Tony,
Have you ever thought of doing elipses? I buy the drafting templates for the various elipses for my large cabs. Actually I haven't bought any for a number of years because they never wear out, but the local club has a workshop that I'm helping out in and they are interested in the elipses. I went online and WOW! have they ever become expensive! I was going to get a set for them but not after seeing the prices.

Bob, I have one of those drafting templates from when I was drawing by hand back in the old days. I just use that. I can draw elipse templates if you like. Just let me know.

Yeah, those are the ones, Tony. I use an aluminum stylus that I have had for many years.

I have a bunch of various elipses - Isometric 15, 25, 30, 45 and 60 degrees up to 7". I just laid one on a copy machine and it came out with fairly good contrast. I also have some clear plastic. I'm going to have the members make their own from these. It should work.

If you are still sending out the pdf templates, please send them my way at hdrider199@yahoo.com

Has someone made them up in plastic? If so, how much are you selling them for?

Thanks

I am still trying to reach my acquaintance with the laser machining business. He still has not replied to my inquiries about making them up in plastic. I will see him for sure when he comes up to fish in July and will ask him again if I have not heard from him in the meantime.

Rocknut, I will send you a copy. As far as having them done it plastic Ken was looking into that for me. Through another group I found a place that can do it but I don't know the cost yet. I think I'd want to try and reduce the number of sheets to cut the cost.

That would be pretty easy to do, Tony. Maybe a better idea would be to shrink size of each sheet to about half size leaving less space between the openings. Smaller sheet size is probably easier to handle, as well.
