One thing I'm keeping an eye out for

Postby MMBien on Tue Jul 21, 2009 11:11 pm

I've been brushing up on my earth sciences and geology the last couple days and have tried to understand the geological map of new york state with little success. The one thing I can derive from the map is that the region I live in has seen a lot of erosion at work. Although a lot of it is normal erosion there are large areas that are still obviously glacial erosion from the last ice age. I remember, back in school, that our earth science teachers spoke of deposits of sometimes deeply eroded stone left behind by receding glaciers. I don't know if there are any of these deposits nearby but if I ever did find one that was partially exposed do you guys think it would be worth a look?

I think it'd be fun to poke around an area like that. Don't know what you'd find but that's half the fun of it! Even if you don't find any lapidary material I bet you come home with some new yard rocks.

We've had a lot of rainfall this year in central new york. It's likely going to be one of the wettest summers on record. This might help expose these moraines a little more if any exist here. If not I can always head uphill, going south, east or north here all goes uphill, to find better exposed formations. For now though I can be content with searching the surrounding areas and gathering information.
On a side note there is a possibility of a trip to the Herkimer Diamond Mines in the near future. We'll be sure to take lots of pictures should that trip become a reality. Might even get a hold of some interesting specimens for the growing collection.

Keep us posted on what you find. Rain always helps out.
