Hello from Baltimore,MD

Postby KCBROWNEYES on Sun Feb 22, 2009 9:39 am

Hello!

My name is Kathy and I am a medical technologist. I live in Baltimore,MD and work in Annapolis. I am also an avid jewelry designer and have just recently gotten interested in learning to cut cabochons. I have joined a local lapidary club and will be going there to learn.I have been reading everything I can get my hands on about cutting cabochons, and I bought a DVD that shows the whole process, start to finish. I can hardly wait to try it myself! I have bought a fortune in rock slabs (it has become a true addiction!) , rough and lapidary books! Now, I just have to get to the workshop! This looks like a great site and I look forward to learning all that I can!

Hi Kathy,

Welcome!!!! Ahhhh yes, you sound like the rest of us. It IS truly an addiction. Ive always loved rocks but just started seriously collecting and cabbing 2 years ago. It begins to take over your life. My best advice? Dont fight it, just embrace it because there is now no hope for you LOL

Looking forward to your posts.

Thanks Shannon!

I know I'm in trouble! I have a Covington Combo Unit on Layaway. I live in an apartment and may have to move to use the unit! But I am sure it will be worth it!

Kathy, just do what I do.......I cab in my house. Ive got a workstation set up in one corner of my dining room. I do have to try harder to keep things clean and orderly but it sure is nice to be able to cab whenever I want in a nice warm house. Plus I have kids.....if my equipment was out in a shop, I would never get out there.

I want to set the equipment up in the apartment, but I am worried about the noise. I don't want the neighbors to complain and get me kicked out! I dont really know how loud the saw, grinders, etc will be.

Hi, Kathy. Welcome to the rock world!

I use fair-sized equipment in my garage, but it is not really extremely noisy. The grinder shouldn't bother your neighbors, and if Shannon can do it indoors, you can too. I'd guess a grinder isn't any louder than a dishwasher or a washing machine. A trim saw can make some noise, though. If you are in a club, maybe you could trim there, then grind at home. Good luck!

Hi Kathy,

I agree with Jody, the trim saw is what will bother your neighbors, but welcome to the forum Doctor.
